Helping our families with resources.
First Signs, Next Steps.
NAA has created the First Signs, Next Steps Toolkit to help parents who are concerned about their child’s development and guide them through assessment, diagnosis, and obtaining services. The toolkit is free and available at the link below.
If your child is young and you suspect something is wrong, immediately seek early intervention services.
Ask your child’s pediatrician to put you in touch with the early intervention system in your community or region
Contact the Pediatrics branch in a local hospital and ask where you should call to find out about early intervention services in your area.
Autism and wandering.
Wandering/elopement is the tendency for an individual to leave the safety of a responsible person’s care or safe area, which may result in potential harm or injury. This might include running off from adults at school or in the community, leaving the classroom without permission, or exiting the house when the family is unaware. This behavior is considered common and short-lived in toddlers but may persist or re-emerge in those with autism.
